HERMAN MELVILLE-4

Free will and predestination, man’s pursuit of elusive truth, and the nature of evil and knowledge are some of the important themes in Moby Dick.

Later work (1852 – 1856) included Pierre, a historical novel, Israel Potter, Piazza Tales, a collection of short stories and in 1856, The Confidence Man, and a satirical novel. At the time of his death he lift unpublished his last long work of fiction, Billy Budd. This masterly novelette was not printed until 1924, when a new generation had rediscovered Melville and had begun, to give him overdue recognition as a great writer of philosophical fiction.

HERMAN MELVILLE-3

The first two books were highly successful in attracting the interest of the reading public, because of the novelty of their materials, their workmanlike style, their frankness about sex and their sensational attacks on what was being done to the native people by missionaries on the islands.

Melville’s masterpiece, Moby Dick (1851), recounted a whaling voyage under the leadership of Captain Ahab, who was obsessed with a desire to hunt down the great white whale, Moby Dick. By the time the philosophical and allegorical narrative tells of the long pursuit of this “monster” and of the whale’s final triumph, Melville has covered thoroughly the topic of whales and whalers.

CHARLOTTE BRONTE and EMILY BRONTE…

Emily was a true lyrical poet in a spiritual and mystical strain, and developed a style of austere intensity. Emily Bronte’s only novel, Wuthering Heights (1847) was a masterpiece. Her death only a year later cheated the world of major works which might have been. The setting is a wild part of Yorkshire at the beginning of the century.
His relationship with Catherine Earnshaw, whose will is as strong as his, has a mystical quality in which ordinary passion is quite lost. Their dialogue has a force and a simplicity that is unmatched in the fiction of the era. The conventionally good characters seem mediocre and slightly contemptible in contrast with intensity of Catherine and Healthcliff.

CHARLOTTE BRONTE and EMILY BRONTE…

Anne Bronte’s two romance novels, Alice Grey (1847) and The Tenant of Wild fell Hall (1848) are not as highly regarded as the works of her sisters. The former is based on Anne’s experiences as a governess, the latter on her horror at the spectacle of her brother’s disintegration. Anne’s books are gracefully written and have an air of reality, but they do not produce the same exceptional impression. It has been suggested that they would not survive as widely read books without the reputation of Charlotte and Emily, and the interest in all that has to do with the Bronte family.

CHARLES DICKENS

In 1867, Dickens again traveled to the United States and there damaged his already weakened health by an extensive and energetic lecture tour. He had taken to reading from his own works, and the demands on him were many and insistent. On his return to England, he began work on a detective novel, Edwin Drood, in the style of his friend Wilkie Collins. In the midst of the work he died at the age of 58.

Dickens seemed to have little sense of emotional proportion. In his life as in his work, he was lavish. His activities included theatrical, social, and philanthropic undertakings.

At the height of his career, he was the shining literary light of his day. Crowds stood waiting impatiently for new installments of his novels. Although he was subjected to severe criticism in his lifetime for what seemed careless and often shoddy work, his fame did not diminish in force. He loved attention and popular acceptance.

CHARLES DICKENS

The other books in this productive period were Bleak House (1853), a satire against the delays and idiocies of the law; Hard Times (1854), a novel of revolt which stated the position of the radical as opposed to errant individualism; Little Dorrit (1857), the successful and firmly formed historical novel; A Tale of Two Cities (1859), and Great Expectations (1861), which doubtless contains, in the first chapters at least, the finest of Dickens’ writing.

Before his death, Dickens wrote one more full-length novel, Our Mutual Friend (1865), which is regarded by lovers of Dickens as one of his finest works; restrained, unified, and complete.
